Herkimer Diamond Double-terminated quartz crystals are Herkimer diamonds. These were discovered within exposed outcrops of dolomite. This was in and around Herkimer County, this is how the diamonds got their name. The reason this gemstone is called a diamond is because of its clarity and natural faceting. They are not real diamonds and the crystals possess double termination points and 18 total faces. This gemstone is also known as a Middleville diamond or a Little Falls diamond. The workmen first discovered Herkimer diamonds and then it became widely recognized. In the late 18th century the Herkimer diamonds discovered them in large quantities as they were cutting into the Mohawk River Valley dolomite. Double-point quartz crystals can also be found in sites around the world. But only those mined in Herkimer County can be given Herkimer diamonds.
