Biwa Pearls are freshwater pearls that were originally grown by mussels rather than oysters. Unlike other saltwater pearls, biwa or freshwater pearls have no exterior body at their center. Instead of inserting an external body inside the mussel, the Biwa Pearl farmers cut the shroud of a living mussel. The mussel produces nacre as a result of this process, which eventually results in the development of an amazing pearl.
