The 'cat's eye' optical effect that can be seen in certain gemstones is known as chatoyancy. The effect that occurs when a strong light is projected onto a rounded, reflecting surface and causes light to be reflected in a narrow perpendicular line to the observer's line of sight is known as 'chatoyancy.' Look at a spool of gleaming thread or some cabochon-cut jewels to see what I mean.
