It's a phosphate mineral that's rather uncommon. Variscite is sometimes mistaken for turquoise, however, it is usually greener in color and contains less copper. Variscite is a secondary mineral generated by direct deposition of phosphate-bearing water in a near-surface environment that has reacted with aluminum-rich rocks. Variscite is a semi-precious stone that is commonly used for cabochons, jewellery, sculptures, and ornamental purposes. It was initially reported in 1837 and called after the type site of Variscia, which is the old name for the German province of Vogtland.
