Tourmaline gemstones are all mixed crystals of aluminium boron silicate that may also contain iron, manganese, sodium, lithium, or potassium. While tourmaline was discovered in Brazil in the 16th century, the green crystals were initially confused for emeralds. It wasn't until the nineteenth century that the stone was identified as tourmaline. Tourmaline is derived from the Singhalese phrase tura mali, which means "stone combined with beautiful colours." The prefix watermelon refers to the particular colour combination resembling the same name's fruit. With a Moh's scale hardness of 7-7.5, watermelon tourmaline is a relatively durable stone for jewellery, and its distinctive and eye-catching colours make it a designer favourite.

Watermelon tourmaline adds colour and drama to an extraordinary piece, whether sliced or faceted.
