Although the epidote mineral cluster bears the epidote moniker, the gems themselves belong to the clinozoisite-epidote solid-solution series. All zoisite variants, including the most well-known member, tanzanite, were lost to this grouping in 2006. In monoclinic clinozoisite, zoisite is an orthorhombic polymorph. Because the other epidote constituents have monoclinic crystal structures, mineralogists classified and removed zoisite from the group. Large faceted epidotes are almost black, lifeless gems since they are usually so dark in tone. Smaller stones, less than 3 to 4 carats, can, on the other hand, often turn out to be dazzling and vibrant faceted gems. Pistazite, also known as pistacite, is yellowish-green epidote that has a "pistachio" tint.
