The deep red or brownish-red streak in hematite is distinctive and diagnostic. Near Ouro Preto, Brazil, a vast substance made up of hematite, martite, and gangue minerals have been discovered. Instead of a red streak, this granular material has a dark brown one. Despite its resemblance to psilomelane, a manganese oxide, hematite, unlike its lookalike, conducts electricity relatively weakly. Hematites can be found in almost every European country. Although much of this material is cut at Idar-Oberstein, Germany, it originates in England.

Origin: Europe. Color:  deep red or brownish-red. Clarity: Opaque. Cut: Cabochon. Treatment: Untreated 100% Genuine Gemstone
