The creation of Roman glass was based on Hellenistic technological traditions, and it began with the production of brightly colored cast glass containers. Soda-lime glass is a type of old Roman glass. Silicon, sodium, and calcium oxides were used, along with potassium, magnesium, and aluminum oxides. Iron oxide, an impurity, causes a distinctive pale blue-green tint in some Roman glass.
