Glass artifacts from the Roman Empire have been discovered in the their home, industrial, and funerary contexts all around the empire. Glass was mostly used to make containers, but it was also utilized to make mosaic tiles and window glass. The creation of Roman glass was based on Hellenistic technological traditions, and it began with the production of brightly colored cast glass containers. Soda-lime glass is a type of old Roman glass. Silicon, sodium, and calcium oxides were used, along with potassium, magnesium, and aluminum oxides. Iron oxide, an impurity, causes a distinctive pale blue-green tint in some Roman glass.
