Cuprite (copper oxide) crystals are often too tiny and opaque to facet. Cuprite is frequently found in combination with other copper-bearing minerals such as malachite, chrysocolla, and azurite. These mixed stones can be carved into cabochons by lapidaries. Cuprite is a copper ore that may also be used to create a patina on copper and bronze artifacts. Burnite is a combination of the minerals azurite and cuprite. Chalcotrichite is a cuprite variety that is dense and fibrous. Tile ore is a massive, brick-red variety. Cuprite frequently pseudomorphs into malachite, which means that its chemistry transforms to malachite but the outward crystal shape remains cuprite.
