European Trade Centre: Austria is not producing any natural gems, yet she is one of the well-known European trade centres, particularly of jewellery. Because of the jewellery loving Austrians, there is a big internal market ofjewellery which is retailed by thousands of stores.

World Diamond Centre: Antwerp in north Belgium is an important world centre for rough and polished diamonds as well as industrials. The credit for modern diamond development also goes to Belgium where the industry has thrived for the last five centuries. Now it is one of the foremost countries in processing and trading diamond. Additionally, its a centre for industrial diamonds. It is the most important trading centre for the DTC, Russia and lately for the giant producer Australia. Argyle Diamonds, the big Australian producer has established its global rough diamond distribution centre at Antwerp. Canada, world's latest diamond producer, has also started rough sales at Antwerp.

Antwerp is the main centre for diamonds, where an estimated 50% of the world supply of diamonds is cut and polished. There are nearly 3,500 diamond dealers, 1,000 brokers and about 300 manufacturers.

Top Ranking for Indians: Many prominent Indian diamantaires also have their establishments at Antwerp and are counted among the top-notchers in Belgium. They had been globalizing the diamond industry from the springboard of Antwerp.

Historical Heritage: Besides Antwerp and Kempen, the other province which has a diamond industry is West Flanders, where the quiet city of Diksmuide, 150 kilometres away from Antwerp, can boast of a diamond background of centuries vintage. The diamond industry there is fully automated now. The city has a diamond museum too. Several jewellery manufacturers are located in nearby Kortrijk.

Belgium has a well-established modern diamond cutting and polishing industry which undertakes the processing of diamonds from various sources.

The Antwerpse Diamantbank N.V. is the only bank, not only in Belgium but in the whole world, that deals exclusively with diamond dealers. It has also established a Swiss subsidiary at Geneva, Switzerland. It has a branch at Mumbai, India also.

Four Bourses: Diamond trading in Antwerp is done in four boLi-rses (exchanges) : Antwerp Diamantkring, Bourse for Diamond Trading, Diamond Club of Antwerp and Beurs Voor Diamanthandel, founded in 1904 has celebrated its centennial in June, 2004. Belgium's crown prince Filip and his betterhalf princess Mathilde graced the celebrations in Antwerp. The celebrations continued titll August, 2004.

Together these four bourses make up the largest concentration of bourses in anyone city in the world.
