Gems Processing : Gems cutting industry has been installing automatic cutting machines. Modernization is afoot with foreign collaboration.
Local cutters excel in the art of fashioning gemstones. Their skill is most evident in the cutting of sapphire in which the blue color is not evenly distributed.

Because gem cutting is exacting difficult art, it often becomes a family tradition. Modern training has been provided to about 400 artisans. A jewellery school has also been established.

Gems are entirely cut and polished locally as no gems rough is allowed to be exported, except geuda stones that turn into valuable blue sapphires by heat treatment.

Official Support : For healthy development of the gems industry, as well as elimination of trafficking in gems, the Government has floated the State Gem Corporation of Sri Lanka. Besides marketing at home and overseas, this state body is undertaking modernization also, particularly in the field of cutting and polishing. The Corporation is also sending out young artisans for training abroad.

The Corporation is organizing promotional activities on a worldwide basis, which include shows, exhibitions, films, videos, etc.

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board is also lending a helping hand in export promotion.
