Blue Sapphire National Gem: In late 2003, the Sri Lanka Government has declared Blue Sapphire as the National Gemstone of Sri Lanka. To commemorate this recognition, the Government also decided to issue a colored postage stamp displaying a Sri Lankan blue sapphire. Blue Sapphire, it may be mentioned, figures prominently in the rich wealth of colored gemstones mined, processed and exported by Sri Lanka. It is also set beautifully in precious jewellery produced by the island.
