Explorations Continuing: Prospecting for and exploration of the deposits continue in the Taiga near the White Sea and these diamonds from thli Russian North appeared on the world market by the mid-1990s. Right now, the Pomor-Almaz enterprise, to which a special highway is being planned has been set up for commercial operation of the first six diamond mines. As searches continue, geologists are sure to make many more discoveries.

Huge Reserves:Russia is said to own more than half of the world's diamond reserves and is one of the biggest diamond exporters.

Extremely Difficult Mining: Most of Russia's diamonds are produced in Sakha (Yakutia) where the severe climatic conditions in Siberia make mining extremely difficult, particularly underground, although specifically designed Russian technology has helped to cope with such conditions. A number of technical exchanges have taken place among engineering staff and geologists from mines in South Africa and Yakutia.

Mineral Abundance: The former Soviet Union had discovered roughly 500 kimberlite pipes in Siberia, of which at least 13 have significant-sized diamondiferrous deposits. There is also substantial alluvial production. Reserves are believed to be large and there have been recent commercial discoveries. Major expansions in production is probable over the 1990's.
The recent bonanza was reported from the Russian North: Geologists in Arkhangelst are certain that the diamonds of the Russian North are only the first link in the chain of new deposits in the area. This newly discovered deposit contains a lot of diamonds and they are better than those mined from Yakutia.

What is very important and valuable is that half of the diamonds mined are gems. Moreover, they are of an unusual shape, so called curve-facted rhombododecahedra.

The task is not only to get this wealth out of the ground but also to turn uncut diamonds into optical articles, parts for precision mechanical engineering, abrasive instruments and of course, jewellery. That is why the local authorities are seeking, with the aid of production enterprises of the nearby cities of Severodvinsk and Arkhangelsk, to start the manufacture of diamond end-products for broad use. But one diamond processing facility is clearly insufficient.

Yakutia is known to be producing as many as 100 minerals.
