Ongoing war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has made gem production sporadic. After DRC troops drove out Rwandan troops in 2002, gems began to flow out. In 2004, approximately 20 to 30kg of fine tourmaline was estimated to have come out of the country.
