Black Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. Black Onyx comes through Latin from the Greek onyx meaning 'claw' or 'fingernail'. With its fleshtone color, onyx can be said to resemble a fingernail. The English word 'nail' is cognate with the Greek word.
