The All Pakistan Gem Merchants & Jewellers Association is endeavouring to obtain foreign help for developing and modernizing the Pakistani jewellery industry. For this, top jewellery experts from other countries were invited to visit Pakistan jewellery manufacturers and advise them.

Export Promotion Council: Pakistan has also constituted an Expot Promotion Council for developing gems and jewellery exports.

The Council organized an International Gems & Minerals Fair - when foreign buyers including Indians came to Peshawar. The stalls put up by Pakistani gems dealers were full of rubies, emeralds, yellow sapphires, peridot, aquamarine, tourmaline, kunjite, garnet, amethyst, etc., all reportedly mined locally from the high Karakoram Mountain Range. In the Nakar Hills area of this region is situated the highest aquamarine mine in the world

The aquamarine mined is of very high quality, but because of its large crystals of light color it is mainly used for ornamental purposes. There are large deposits in this area but the yield is limited because of the forbidding weather and also because of the fact that only Pakistani villagers are allowed to dig for aquamarine in the snow-bound area.
