Globalization of Diamond Industry:
Besides working wonders at home, Indian gems men, particularly diamantaires
of the younger generation fanned out to achieve globalization, after successfully
democratizing diamonds earlier, to make them available even to the common
gems and jewellery lovers. They took small, low-priced diamonds produced
in India to every corner of the world. To increase the availability of
diamonds, Indian diamantaires not only went places for trading but have
also established diamond cutting and polishing plants at various places
all over the world. Thus, they have not only by-passed labour and tax
related and other daunting problems encountered at some old centres but
also exposed other regions of the world to the fascination of charming
gems and lovely jewellery, which no more remain the exclusive privilege
of the classes, but are now available to the masses as well.
In order to broad-base the diamond industry, Indian diamantaires have
successfully undertaken globalization. Consequently, diamond cutting and
polishing projects have been established by Indians in various countries
like China, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri- Lanka, Indonesia, South Korea, and
even Russia near the Arctic Circle. Canada is the next destination. No
wonder India has deservingly earned the compliment - "The Sun Never
Sets on Indian Diamonds !" Wholesale moonstone JewelleryJewellery on Fast Track:
Traditionally jewellery-Ioving India has taken up jewellery in a big way
in modern times. Previously only goldsmiths who operated even in villages
were fabricating handcrafted gold and silver jewellery but of late modern
manufacturing machines have been installed for mass production of trendy,
sophisticated jewels. Fashion designing, even its computerized
Version is spreading and so are scientific training facilities at important
centres. Yet another plus point is that for studded jewellery, locally
cut and polished diamonds as well as colored gemstones are readily available
in India. Lately introduced Hallmarking has also been helpful. Thus, India
has taken a head start in the international jewellery market.
Modern machine-made jewellery is being patronized by Indian connoisseurs
too. For promoting it, some top-notchers like De Beers have been launching
their latest branded jewellery collections in the inland market. Their
innovative launches include devotional jewellery and cover such offbeat
festive occasions like Ganesh Chaturti, Rakhee and St. Valentine's Day.
To support these ventures the World Gold Council (WGC) and the Platinum
Guild International (P.G.I.) are also here at the back and call of the
rapidly growing and proliferating Indian jewellery sector. Besides, Indian
jewellery manufacturers are collaborating with overseas notables for fabricating
and marketing jewellery all over the world. Argyle of Australia, one of
the major natural diamond producers of the world, is one such big name.
It has formed the Indo-Argyle Diamond Corporation (IADC) which is actively
promoting Indian diamond-set jewellery in USA. Wholesale turquoise Jewellery
Thus, with the vigorous on-drive of Indian entrepreneurs at home and non-resident
Indians operating abroad, the Indian gems and jewellery sector has succeeded
in broadening its production base, international sales network and increasing
its global presence.
Solid Infrastructure:
By endeavouring to improve and innovate ceaselessly, this country has
acquired considerable strength too. It was because of this painstakingly
built solid base that India could not only survive the gnawing global
economic recession in 2001 following the 9/11 disater, but could also
sustain its gems and jewellery exports in earlier difficult years. In
spite of Inventory accumulations, severe erosion of profit margins, inordinately
delayed payments, failures, etc., India resolutely faced all problems
and marched on.
Original Gem Land:
Retrospection on India's great past would show that it is the original
gems land which discovered natural gemstones as well as the craft and
art of turning out exquisite jewels by cutting, polishing and setting
them into various ornaments. Thus, India has the unique distinction of
being not only a natural gem mineral producer, but also the first and
foremost processing centre for all-time great gems. Wholesale druzy Jewellery
India has a glorious history of diamond mining, processing and trading.
It was at one time, the undisputed leader in this field. Diamond production
in India is, in fact, traced back to many centuries B.C.. The first ever
diamond in the world was mined in India. Some of the superlative, most
famous diamonds of the world like the Great Moghul,Koh-i-noor, Hope, Pitt,
Nizam, Idol's Eye, Orloff, etc., were also 'born' in India. During the
16th and 17th centuries, diamond mining in Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh
remained a flourishing activity. In fact, India was the sole producer
and supplier of diamonds to the world before the discovery of Brazilian
fields in the 17th century and the later emergence of South Africa, Russia
and Australia, as major producers. Today twenty countries of the world
are mining natural diamonds and 30 are processing them, yet India maintains
its leading position mainly because of processing smalls, which most of
the other cutting centres are not in a position to take on due to various
reasons.
Ancient Diamond Deposits:
The sources of Indian natural diamonds can be grouped as :
(a) Diamondiferrous Kimberlites;
(b) Diamondiferrous Conglomerate; and
(c) Deposits in older alluvium and stream gravels.
As is well known, Indian diamonds are confined to three major regions, namely :
(i) Panna Diamond Belt and 10 other districts of Madhya Pradesh &
Chhatisgarh;
(ii) Wajrakarur-Lattavaram Belt of Andhra Pradesh;
(iii) Deposits of Orissa.
Panna Deposits:
In the Panna Belt, there are three known sources for diamonds. They are
(a) Kimberlite Pipe; (b) Conglomerate (Jhiri and Itwa Conglomerates of
the Rewa group); and (c) Quaternary Gravels.
The Panna Belt is unique as it is the only example of a working, modern
mining and processing plant exploiting a primary source of Kimberlitic
Diatreme with an annual production of around 17,000 cts. Besides, it sustains
numerous unorganized workings for alluvial diamonds spread over a stretch
of 80 kms. The primary source rocks for diamonds, kimberlite pipes are
located at Majhagawan and Hinota (980-1120Ma+40Ma) in the western
extremity of the belt and are intrusive into the Kaimur Group of the Vindhyan
Basin.
The other important sources of diamonds are the conglomerates occurring
at different stratigraphic levels of the Rewa Group, comprising Panna
shales, Itwa sandstone, Jhiri shale and Gahadra sandstone. The conglomerates
are thin, a few centimetres to a metre thick. Thus, it is interpreted
that the occurrence took place within the perimeter of the Vindhyan basin
in an interlude of sedimentation, whereby the diamonds were carried into
the sink by the fluvial system.
The third source-rock, for diamonds is that found in Quaternary Gravels
spread along the courses of the Ken, Ranj and Baghain rivers and their
tributaries as well as the lateritic gravels trapped within the Baghain
sandstone.
Other Diamond Areas :
Besides Panna, some other districts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh
have also been focused by recent surveys. The State Governments have therefore
decided to get the following other districts explored for diamonds: Raipur,
Bastar, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur, Raigarh, Sarguja, Sidhi, Satna and
Chhatarpur.
