Gem' Jewellerv Information Centre
The Gem & Jewellery Information Centre(GJIC) based at Jaipur, India's
main colored gemstones city, is a non - Government, voluntary body, the
only one of its kind in India, dedicated to the all-round development of
the gems and jewellery industry and trade. Lending a helping hand in promoting
the gems and jewellery trade and industry assumes added importance, when
viewed in the light of the fact that its commitment and undertaking had
been self-inspired. Wholesale Labradorite Jewellery
The activities of the Centre include publishing and research, dissemination
of up to date information, promotion and interaction, consultancy and liaison.
Its task has been vital to opinion-building and decision-making in favour
of the industry. The Centre also extends hospitality to visiting business
persons in India and organizes advantageous market contacts for diamonds,
jewels and colored gemstones.
Non-Profit Promotion:
The GJIC, it may be noted, does not undertake any gems and jewellery business
itself. It helps and promotes this sector only as a catalyst and it is proud
to record that it has been successful in fulfilling its mission of helping
the sector selflessly.
GJIC was founded in 1963 by the late V. V. Kala, pioneer gem journalist
in Jaipur, the renowned colored gems centre of India. In those days, when
the hibernating Indian gems and jewellery sector was just waking up to its
vast potential, GJIC's voice was a lone one predicting tremendous growth
and booming exports. Whatever was required for making this dream come true
was forcefully advocated by the GJIC. We are proud to record that the subsequent
years confirmed beyond doubt the promise of these projections, and India
has once again become a force to reckon with. Today, it is the world leader
of diamonds and a major centre of the colored gemstones industry. India
is further poised to achieve a big breakthrough in studded jewellery. Wholesale moonstone Jewellery
This tremendous progress over the decades after independence has not been easy of achievement. The going has been tough, in the face of strong global competition. During these years of struggle, the GJIC did not remain a silent spectator. Drawn into the rough and tumble of competitive growth, the organization had to stretch itself to the full and assume multiple responsibilities, particularly for enlightening the gems sector and bridging the information gap.
Meanwhile, for speedy global communication and upto the minute information, GJIC has taken a website on Internet (http:// www.diamondworld.net and www.gemjournal.com).
Global Contacts:
With the multi-dimensional initiatives aimed at healthy development of the
gems and jewellery sector, the GJIC has been working devotedly over the
last 30 years. No wonder, many eminent visitors from all parts of the globe
make it a point to compare notes and discuss matters of vital importance
with the GJIC, when they visit India. The CSO's former President, Sir Philip
Oppenheimer was one such VIP. The then CSO President Anthony Oppenhemier,
Chairman- Nicky Oppenheimer, and DTC, Director Rajiv Bhandari came to Jaipur
for wide ranging talks with us.
Leading British writer publisher and gemmologist Eric Bruton, along with
a whole contingent of British jewellers and gemmologists; a jewellers' team
from Italy; Australian Trade Commissioner in India; dignitaries from the
Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council; Hindustan Diamond Co. Pvt. Ltd.,
etc., are some of the other notables, who have visited the GJIC in the past.
Director Alok Kala undertakes periodic fact finding and review tours to
all parts of the world. GJIC organizes information booths at international
gems and jewellery fairs. This effort had been acknowledged to be of benefit
to information seekers. To access the global diamond situation, he also
undertakes an annual visit to Antwerp, the world diamond trade nucleus.
His latest visit was in 2004, Previously he was in London on July 12, 2000
when Wholesale turquoise Jewellery
De Beers took a historic turn and Nicky Oppenheimer announced the epoch
making change of strategy. In 2002,he has undertaken a tour of South-East
Asia when he visited Thailand and Hong Kong. Then he went to Switzerland
to attend the Basel Fair and Italy to visit VicenzaOro-2 Fair. In 2004 he
has covered the US Tucson fair and the Orogemma expo. His mid-year visit
to Italy, Antwerp has become a regular annual program.
World Class Trade Publications:
For enlarging and enriching the scope and ambit of this vitally important
function, a Publications Division was established soon after the founding
of the GJEC.
The GJIC and its sister Co. International Journal House publish two globally
circulated gems and jewellery news magazines: Journal of Gem Industry (English
& Hindi) and Diamond World (English & Gujarati). Diamond World (Gujarati)
was launched on Deepawali, 2000 at Surat. They also bring out this, Gem
& Jewellery Year Book, an international reference annual now in its
twentieth year of continuous service. Diamond Diary, is also brought out
every year. Diamond Handbook of India, Diamond Handbook of Surat and even
a Colored Gemstones Handbook of India & Yellow Pages, as well as Mumbai
Diamond Telephone Directory exclusively for the gems and jewellery sector
are other publications.
Keeping in view the promotional importance of designing contests and precious
exhibitions, both our popular periodicals have decided to venture into new
avenues The Journal, which has now become the Journal of Gem &
Jewellery Industry for wider coverage has launched a Jewellery Design Contest for unveiling the contemporary wealth of India's budding talent. The Diamond World, on the other hand has ventured into organizing Jewellery Shows, debuting with its inaugural Show at Surat in October-November, 2004. It was encouragingly hailed by the exhibiting trade as well as jewellery buying connoisseurs.
Consultancy & Liaison:
The GJIC also provides consultancy and liaison services. Apart from dissemination
of updated information in general, the Centre attends to specific issues
and problems extending its personal attention. Many business and technical
problems are referred to various wings of the organization, which endeavours
to sort them out for extending help desired by those who have to do anything
with gems and jewellery.
The organization offers its good offices for amicably resolving disputes
between business parties in India and abroad.
The GJIC functions as an effective liaison body too between foreign and
Indian jewellers for fostering friendly, mutually beneficial trade relations
between them. It invites foreign "gems people to the country and arranges
group meetings and get-togethers for them.
The Centre also acts as guide to foreign parties in their business efforts
in India.
