International Colored Gemstone Association

he International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) is a non-profit organization serving the colored gemstones industry worldwide.

The ICA has resolved to promote the understanding, appreciation & sale of colored gemstones, address related technical & promotional issues, research and subsidize scientific solutions to related problems, establish closer international communications, disseminate information and perpetuate ethical standards in the industry. It held its first Congress in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany in 1985, Thailand in 1987, Colombo was the venue of its 1989 Congress, where ICA initiated an International Intertrade Colored Gemstones Auction for promotional funds. It promotes gemstones through its Gem Bureau. Later Congresses followed at Hawaii-1991, Israel-1993, Japan-1995, Brazil-1997 and Italy-1999 the next global conclave was held in Sydney, Australia in 2001.

'Jewel in the Crown', held in Jaipur, India in 2003 was the best attended Congress till then and the consensus among attendees being that it was among the most spectacular and exciting jewellery events ever held.

ICA's most recent, the 11 th biennial Congress was held in Bangkok from February 18 to 21 ,2005 at Bangkok; in which more than 200 representatives from 36 countries took part.

ICA has an Early Warning Network to alert the trade about new treatments and synthetics and Mine Alerts to keep membership apprised of new mine developments. Through its "Ambassadors," ICA keeps its membership apprised of developments in nearly 40 countries. ICA has three membership categories: Regular Membership, available to miners, cutters and wholesale distributors; Associate Membership, open to gemmologists, representatives of gemstone industry-related laboratories, national associations or organizations, government agencies and gemstone curators; and Junior Membership, available to persons under the age of 30 who qualify as regular members.
