Major Diamond Mines: The major 'pipe mines' are found in the Kimberley region, the Cape Province, the Orange Free State and in the Transvaal area. The alluvial deposits are principally situated in Namaqualand, where there are five mining areas adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. A new diamond mine in Lichtenburg was also found. The major South African mines are managed and controlled by De Beers. These consist of the Finsch mine, alluvial area in Namaqualand, the Kimberley division of four mines, namely De Beers, Dutoitspan, Wesselton, Bultfontein and finally the Premier mine. The Finsch mine in the Cape Province is the biggest producing mine in South Africa.
An extension program has also been undertaken under which mines like the Wholesale gemstone Jewellery Wesselton are undergoing further development, and plants for recovery of small diamonds from the accumulated dumps near the old workings have been installed.
