Gemmolo Jicar Services & Training: Thailand has a Gemmological Testing Laboratory (G.T.L.) offering scientific and technical services. In Bangkok the Asian Institute of Gemmological Sciences imparts up-to-date training to new aspirants, some of whom come from other countries. G.I.A. Thailand is also offering training in diamonds, colored gemstones and gemmology.

Three Thai Universities have recently been instructed by the Government to start training courses for gems artisans.
The Gemmological Institute of America (G.I.A.) has also started its training and testing campus in Bangkok.

Gems Intake: Augmented by imports from India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Vietnam, etc., the gemstones that Thailand is able to offer to the buyer is truly impressive. Of these, Rubies and Sapphires are the star attractions.

Besides rubies, sapphires and some emeralds, the other gems now offered by Thailand include various colors of Zircons (the whites selling as Siam or Ceylon Diamonds), Topazes, Jades, Garnets, Citrines, Aquamarines, Turquoises, Corals and Pearls.

Legitimate imports of gems into Thailand are unrestricted.

An important find in late 1978 in this area was of ruby of excellent cabochon grade, good color and faceting quality. tie Rubies are contained in pockets of metamorphic rock. There are surface out-croppings of Rubies over a wide area of the Harts Range. Prior to the opening of this c mine, Australian Rubies were actually alamandine Gqrnets.
