There are about 10,000 artisans in Idar-Oberstein, employed by some 600 firms. Almost the entire working population of this township is engaged in cutting and polishing of gemstones, including rubies, sapphires, emeralds and diamonds. One of the specialities was carving from a wide variety of lesser colored stones, but lately because of tremendous development of this industry in Formosa and South Korea where labour is comparatively cheap, this sector has been cooling off.
