GLIMPSES OF WORLD GEMS CENTRES EUROPE SWEDEN
Sweden, an affluent European country, is a thriving market for gems and jewellery.
Sweden is flanked by the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea, Norway and Finland. For an area of 449,793 sq. kms. it has a population of 8.9 million. Swedish is the official language but other Scandinavian languages are also common. Swedish Kroner is the unit of currency.

Thriving Trade Centre: Although Sweden is neither a major mining nor manufacturing centre, it finds mention in the world gems and jewellery circles because it is a rich market for precious goods. There is an acknowledgeable in-flow of gems, particularly diamonds, some of which are re exported to other European countries. Sales of gems and jewellery to inland buyers and tourists also command good business.

Jewellery : All gold and platinum jewellery weighing one gram or more and all silver articles with a weight of 15 grams or more are controlled by the National Swedish Institute for Testing and Metallurgy. Only precious metal jewellery carrying the prescribed hallmark is allowed to be sold in Sweden. It is important to note that standards also include details such solder, etc.
Only jewellery conforming to the prescribed standards, i.e. containing a specified amount ofthe precious metal, can be hallmarked. The standards are:

Gold - 750/1 000; Silver - 830/1 000 and Platinum - 950/1 000.
