GLIMPSES OF WORLD GEMS CENTRES
AFRICA GHANA : Ghana, another
West African country once figured among the African diamond giants particularly
for industrial diamonds; but with continuous exploitation, production declined
progressively. Lately efforts have been undertaken to increase diamond production
again by new searches and better exploitation. Ghana produces gold also.
Ghana
is bordered by Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Togo and the Gulf of Guinea. Wholesale gemstone Jewellery For an area
of 238,637 sq. kms., it has a population of more than 14 million. English is the
official language and Cedi the unit of currency.
Alluvial
Deposits: Ghana's diamond production mostly comes from alluvial deposits.
Both gems and, in particular, industrial diamonds, were once mined in abundance. The richest diamond bearing area is the Birim Valley. Dousa river is another promising
source. Several other rivers and their tributaries are additional sources. 80%
of Ghana's natural diamonds have been industrials.
In Southern Ghana, diamond
deposits are found along with those of other minerals.
Ghana's
sole diamond producing mine at Akwatia has continuously been in production since
1924. Of late, Akwatia has been squeezed between rising costs, falling prices
and low production. According to the management of Ghana Consolidated Diamonds,
new deposits in the South Birim will have to be exploited if the company is to
survive. Wholesale Ammonite Jewellery Output had fallen from the peak of 2.4 million carats to 800,000 carats
in 1997. However a $12.6 million project including modernization of the Akwatia
mine at a cost of $5.5 million commenced sometime ago.
The mine is operated
by Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD) in which the Government of Ghana has a stake.
Birim Project: Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Ltd., has commissioned its Birim
River Alluvial Diamond Project, which will extend Ghana's important diamond mining
industry for at least a further fifteen years. The remaining recoverable diamond
reserves are estimated between 20 to 50 million carats.Wholesale druzy Jewellery
